The Mad Gab's Story
Mad Gab’s was founded in 1991 by Gabrielle Melchionda, when she stumbled upon a lip balm recipe while studying anthropology. Gab perfected the formula creating a natural lip balm that was neither greasy nor waxy and she gifted it to friends and family, who convinced her to sell her wares. Mad Gab's was born!

1991-1996
Humble & Hustling Beginning
- Gab started making lip balm with beeswax from a neighbor—trying to find one that wasn’t greasy ore waxy and made with pure ingredients.
- Using yellow pages and maps, she found health food stores around the US who were happy to try something new and Mad Gab’s was born!
- After oodles of miles on the road, and a stint in a Business Incubator, Mad Gab’s moved to Maine and was ready to grow.

1997-2002
Up, Up and Away
- Gab is discovered by QVC (through Maine Made Marketing program)—who placed an order for more than she’s sold in all of 1996!
- With her big break (and check!) from QVC, she launches Elephant Lube, a Shea butter salve.
- Vogue, Elle, Seventeen and dozens of magazines feature Elephant Lube and Mad Gab’s!
- L.L. Bean, Nordstrom, Anthropologie and Whole Foods stores join Mad Gab’s growing list of independent retailers around the US.
